Jersey Shore BlueClaws News Release
WILMINGTON, DE - The BlueClaws rallied from 8-0 down with seven runs in the third inning but couldn't plate another in a 12-7 series opening loss at Wilmington on Tuesday.
Wilmington (17-14) took the first of 24 meetings between the teams this season, and first of six this week. The BlueClaws (11-21) fell to 2-5 on their current 12 game road trip.
Yasel Antuna hit a two out solo home run in the first inning to open the scoring, his third home run of the season. The Blue Rocks then added seven runs in the second to blow the game open. The inning included a two run single by Ricardo Martinez, an RBI single by Israel Pineda, and a three run double by Drew Mendoza.
The seven runs were the most allowed by the BlueClaws in an inning this season.
Jersey Shore starter Matt Russell was charged with all right runs, though only three were earned. He exited after 1.2 innings of work.
The BlueClaws, however, would not go down quietly. They scored seven times in the third inning including RBI singles from Jared Carr and McCarthy Tatum, a three-run double from Casey Martin, and a two-run home run from Baron Radcliff, his third of the season.
Tatum extended his hitting streak to six games in the process.
Wilmington, however, padded the lead in the fifth on a two run home run by Drew Mendoza. They added runs later on a passed ball and a fielder's choice for the final margin.
Malvin Pena (1-1) gave up one run in three innings of relief to earn the win. Mendoza had three hits and drove in five in the win.
The teams continue their series on Wednesday night at 6:35 pm. Griff McGarry is the scheduled Jersey Shore starter.
