Belleville Senators News Release
The Belleville Senators grabbed two points Wednesday night after beating the Utica Comets 5-4 in a shootout at CAA Arena.
Rudolfs Balcers and Adam Tambellini scored for Belleville while Filip Gustavsson turned aside both shot's he faced to get his third win of the season.
Belleville had goals in regulation from Jonathan Racine, Filip Chlapik, Jack Rodewald and Paul Carey while Filip Gustavsson made 32 saves. Ivan Kulbakov stopped 27 shots in the Comets goal while Tanner Kero (2), Michael Carcone and Zack MacEwen scored.
After killing off a Chlapik penalty, the Sens broke into the Comets offensive zone and Christian Wolanin whipped a pass across the blue line to Racine who skated into the left faceoff circle before letting a wrister fly at 3:41 for his first goal of the season and just the third of his AHL career.
A wild second period erupted as the two teams combined to score six goals. The Comets tied the game at 1:45 of the period through Cancone as Ben Sexton was in the penalty box but the Sens replied with a pair of goals in 44 seconds.
Chlapik notched his third of the year with a one-timer off of Sexton's behind the net pass at 3:07 before Rodewald's fourth of the year came after great work by Nick Paul to find a streaking Rodewald in the slot as he flew a wrister past Kulbakov.
Utica cut the Belleville lead to 3-2 on a five-on-three power play as Kero's one-timer from near the goal line beat Gustavsson glove side at 9:05 after a nice cross-ice feed by Jonathan Dahlen.
Sens defenceman Pat Sieloff was stuffed on a short-handed breakaway as he looked to restore the lead but Belleville ultimately gave up its third power play marker of the period moments later as MacEwen buried a rebound at 10:44 to make it 3-3.
But Belleville would compose themselves once more as Carey drove the net before lifting the puck over Kulbakov's left shoulder for his first goal of the season at 15:27.
Utica tied the game 8:17 into the third on the power play as Kero scored his second of the night and Utica's fourth man advantage goal of the night to send the game to overtime.
Senators forward Chase Balisy played in his 300th career AHL game tonight.
Belleville is back in action Friday as they host the Toronto Marlies as the Sens kick off their Hockey Fights Cancer weekend. Tickets are available.
