Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Senators jumped out to a 2-0 lead after five and a half minutes, and never looked back as they skated to a 5-1 win against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Saturday night at the Broome County Veteran's Memorial Arena.

The loss dropped the Penguins record to 1-2-0 in the preseason.

Shawn Weller opened the scoring 3:17 into the contest, picking up a rebound off Jeremy Yablonski's wraparound attempt and beating David Brown.

Tomas Kudelka doubled the lead five minutes later, snapping off a shot from the slot that beat the Penguins netminder high.

Brian Yandle, who had a brief tryout with the Penguins during the 2006 postseason, added to the advantage, scoring a power play goal on a blistering slapshot with just two seconds left in the first frame.

Mark Letestu got the Penguins on the board, taking a quick feed from Kevin Croxton and one-timing the shot past Jeff Glass at 8:11 of the second.

Brown stopped 17 of 20 shots during the first half of the game, giving way to Ray Jean at 10:53 of the second period.

The rookie goalie from Bentley University quickly fell victim to the Senators attack, allowing a Ryan Garlock shot to slip through his five hole with 6:27 left in the period to make the score 4-1.

Binghamton failed to score on a two-man advantage (which last for more than 1:30) early in the third period, and Mark Ardelan gave the Pens their best opportunity in the third when he banged a slapshot off the near post. But the only goal of the period came from Garlock who found the empty net with 1:41 left to play.

The chippy contest came to a head late, when Cody Bass was assessed a match penalty for boarding Joe Rullier, which led to Ryan Lannon coming to his injured teammate's defense with just more than two minutes remaining.

Jean made 13 saves in relief, while Glass turned aside 34 of the 35 shots he faced in the win.

The Penguins conclude their preseason schedule on Sunday in Hershey. Game time at the Giant Center is 5:00pm.
