
'Dogs rally to down Amerks in O.T.

HAGERSVILLE, ON - Jonathan Ferland had two goals and two assists to lead the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 7-6 overtime win over the Rochester Americans in their final game of the pre-season on Saturday afternoon at the Hagersville Memorial Arena. With the win, the âDogs finished their three-game pre-season schedule with a 1-2-0-0 record.
The Americans jumped out to an early lead scoring the game's first four goals in the first period. Kenndal McArdle opened the scoring at the 1:05 mark. Pierre-Luc Faubert then added two goals at 1:58 and 7:27 to give Rochester a 3-0 lead. Rounding out the Amerks first-period scoring at 12:29 was Mike Duco with his first goal of the pre-season.
The âDogs got on the scoreboard at 15:23 of the first frame when Ferland was credited with a goal after a scramble in front of the Amerks net. Earning assists on the play were Eric Manlow and Greg Stewart.
Cedrick Desjardins replaced Yann Danis between the pipes for Hamilton at the start of the second period.
Bulldogs forward David Desharnais one-timed a pass from Duncan Milroy past Americans netminder David Shantz for his first goal of the pre-season just 2:49 into the middle stanza. Stewart earned his second assist of the night on the 4-2 goal.
The teams then exchanged goals two times in the remainder of the second frame. Adam Taylor (4:33) and Dan Collins (16:14) on the power play were the goal scorers for the Amerks, while tallying for the âDogs were Milroy (11:21) shorthanded and Janne Lahti (17:34) on the power play. Rochester led 6-4 at the end of the second period.
Hamilton cut the lead to one at 19:16 of the third period when Janne Lahti banged in his second goal of the night off of a rebound. Mathieu Aubin and Ferland recorded the assists on the play.
With just seven seconds remaining in the game, the Bulldogs tied the score 6-6 when Ferland notched his second goal of the game. Lahti and Cornacchia drew helpers on the goal that sent the game to overtime.
The Bulldogs completed the comeback at 3:38 of the extra frame when Gerard Miller finished off a three-way passing play from Duncan Milroy and Sergei Kostitsyn to lift Hamilton to a 7-6 win. Miler's overtime winner was his first goal of the pre-season.
The Bulldogs will open their regular season schedule on Sunday, October 6th at 6:05 p.m. when they travel to Rochester to take on the Americans at Blue Cross Arena.
