Manitoba Moose News Release
DRYDEN, ON. -- The Manitoba Moose and Toronto Marlies played their final pre-season contest Saturday night in the mill town of Dryden, ON, with the Moose coming out on top of a 3-2 overtime decision. Danny Groulx scored the winner in extra time for the Moose, while Jimmy Sharrow and Milan Gajic received credit for Manitoba's previous two goals. Alex Foster and Colin Murphy scored for Toronto. Both teams now return to their respective rinks to prepare for their season openers in the following weeks.
Fresh from a 5-3 victory over the Moose in Fort Frances, ON the night previous - which resulted in the five powerplay goals between both teams - Toronto's special teams was put to the test early in the rematch. The Moose spent four of the first five minutes with a man in the box but stifled the Marlies powerplay, thanks in part to a handful of key saves by Cory Schneider in net.
Ten minutes into the first, and with both teams down a man, the Marlies hit the scoreboard first on an unassisted goal by Alex Foster. But penalties to Toronto's David Ling and Daniel Sparre gave the Moose a two-man advantage, and d-man Jimmy Sharrow continued the offensive contribution he started the previous game by snapping the puck past Justin Pogge to tie the game at one heading into the first intermission.
The Moose came out strong in the second, firing five shots to Toronto's one within the first nine minutes of the middle frame. Two penalties at the eight-minute mark, however, gave the Marlies a two-man advantage for nearly two minutes, and despite valiant penalty killing by the Moose, Colin Murphy netted the visitor's second goal to give Toronto their second lead of the game.
Down by one heading into the final frame, the Moose were on the offensive and hoping to capitalize on an early powerplay. Milan Gajic proved to be the man for the job, snapping the puck past Pogge to tie the game at two.
Manitoba's powerplay hopes continued through the third, as multiple Toronto penalties kept the home team up a player or two for the better part of five minutes. The tides turned later in the period, however, and Toronto benefited from their own extended man-advantage as penalties to Shaun Heshka, Scott May, Maxime Fortunus, and Zack Fitzgerald kept the Moose PK - and backstopper Schneider - hopping through the final minute of regulation time.
90-seconds into overtime, and with Toronto Captain David Ling in the box, Danny Groulx ended the suspense and fired home a one-time shot from the point to give the Moose a 3-2 victory heading into the regular season.
