Norfolk Admirals News Release
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators scored goals on four consecutive shots in the second period as they handed the Norfolk Admirals a 6-2 loss on Friday night at the Broome County Veteran's Memorial Arena.
After a scoreless opening period, the Senators (36-23-5-3) scored four goals on four consecutive shots in the middle of the second stanza. Denis Hamel opened scoring at 10:45 when his shot from the right circle was inadvertently pushed across the goal line by a backchecking Norfolk defenseman. Aaron Slattengren tallied the second goal at 11:48 after his shot from the right dot went off the right skate of Admirals goaltender Riku Helenius. Mark Bomersback made it 3-0 Binghamton at 15:05 when he sent a shot from the right circle off the right shoulder of Helenius and into the net. Less than a minute later, Hamel centered a pass from behind the net for a tip-in by Greg Mauldin at 15:58.
Matt Pope gave the home team a 5-0 lead 5:11 into the final frame when his shot from the left faceoff circle went under the right arm of new Norfolk netminder Craig Kowalski.
The Admirals (26-33-3-5) got on the board just 28 seconds later. Captain Zenon Konopka sent a shot from the top of the left circle that deflected off the skate of Admirals forward Chris Lawrence and through the legs of Binghamton goaltender Jeff Glass at 5:39.
Zack Smith restored Binghamton's five-goal lead just over three minutes later with a shorthanded tally at 8:46.
Brock Hooton capped scoring on the night as he netted his first goal as an Admiral just over four minutes later. After the Senators won a faceoff in the left circle of their own zone, Juraj Simek poked the puck off a Binghamton blade and dropped it back to Hooton, who scored at 12:59.
Riku Helenius (15 shots, 11 saves) took the loss through 35:58. Craig Kowalsk (11 shots, 9 saves) did not receive a decision through 24:02. Jeff Glass (32 shots, 30 saves) got the victory.
Both Norfolk and Binghamton were 0-4 on the power play.
The Admirals and Senators will square off once again tomorrow night as Norfolk continues a five-game road trip. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
