Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets were held to one run for the second straight game and had the potential tying run thrown out at the plate in the eighth inning in a 2-1 loss to the Harrisburg Senators on Thursday night at NYSEG Stadium. The B-Mets stranded four runners in the final three innings and had two others erased on the bases in their fourth loss in the last five games.
Harrisburg scored both runs in the first inning against starter Robert Gsellman. With one out, Gsellman allowed the next three Senators to reach base. After a walk and a single, Matt Skole singled to left field to drive in the first run of the game. With two outs, Pedro Severino then hit a soft liner to left to give Harrisburg a 2-0 lead. The inning ended when Michael Conforto threw out Skole on the plate after a Chris Bostick single.
Binghamton managed four baserunners in the first six innings against Dakota Bacus, failing to push any of them past first base. Brandon Nimmo doubled to begin the seventh inning. With one out, Eudy Pina stroked an RBI single to right field to get the B-Mets on the board. Albert Cordero drew a walk to put the go-ahead run on base with one out. Pinch-hitter Josh Rodriguez struck out swinging for the second out. With Gavin Cecchini at the plate, Cordero was picked off of first base by Severino.
With two outs in the eighth, Michael Conforto grounded a single to center field. Brock Peterson then drew a walk, ending the night for Dakota Bacus. With the go-ahead run on base, Brandon Nimmo greeted reliever Bryan Harper with a single to right field. Trying to score the tying run, Conforto was cut down at the plate by Drew Vettleson. It was the right fielder's fifth outfield assist of the season.
With an out in the ninth, Pina singled to left field to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. Closer Gilberto Mendez proceeded to strike out Cordero and pinch-hitter Aderlin Rodriguez swinging to end the threat.
Harrisburg has taken two of the first three in the series, holding the B-Mets to one run in each of the past two games.
Bacus (4-1) earned the win, allowing a run and five hits in a season-high 7-2/3 innings. Gsellman (1-4) took the loss, allowing two runs in six innings. Jon Velasquez tossed two 1-2-3 innings in his return to Binghamton. Mendez shut the door for his sixth save in seven attempts.
The B-Mets (37-34) wrap up their series with Harrisburg Friday night at 7:05 PM at NYSEG Stadium. RHP Seth Lugo (2-4, 4.15) gets the start for Binghamton against RHP Austin Voth (3-5, 3.62). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
POSTGAME NOTES: The B-Mets have scored two runs in their last 20 innings... Brandon Nimmo extended his season-high hitting streak to 14 games... Harrisburg has won back-to-back road games for the second time since April 20th... Albert Cordero threw out all three attempted stealers.
