Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps had their third consecutive sellout at Parkview Field on Saturday night, but Fort Wayne was unable to win its third in a row as well, suffering a 5-3 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts (Toronto Blue Jays).
Despite the outcome, due to results elsewhere in the Midwest League, the TinCaps remain in position for the Midwest League Eastern Division's final second-half playoff spot, with 28 scheduled games to go in the regular season.
The 'Caps carried a 3-2 lead into the sixth inning, however, the 'Nuts came from behind with a three-run frame. Lansing DH Chavez Young broke a 3-3 tie with a no-doubt two-run homer to right-center field that traveled 426 feet.
TinCaps starter Aaron Leasher went six quality innings. The 22-year-old left-hander from Mt. Pleasant, Mich., held the Lugnuts to two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks, while striking out seven.
Fort Wayne (19-22, 51-59) took a 1-0 lead in the third against Maximo Castillo. DH Hunter Jarmon reached first base on a fielding error against Lansing shortstop Vinny Capra. TinCaps center fielder Robbie Podorsky singled to right field, advancing Jarmon to third, and second baseman Esteury Ruiz followed with another single to score Jarmon.
Lansing (22-20, 65-47) sprung in front in the top of the fourth. After an error put Young on first, Lugnuts right fielder Ryan Noda belted an opposite-field home run to left that made it 2-1.
In back-and-forth fashion, the 'Caps answered with a pair in the home fourth to retake the lead, 3-2. Catcher Juan Fernandez walked, right fielder Aldemar Burgos singled, and third baseman Luis Almanzar also singled to load the bases. Fernandez scored on a passed ball, while Podorsky delivered an RBI single to right that plated Burgos. That lead held until the seventh.
Lugnuts pitchers retired the final 14 TinCaps batters they faced in order.
A crowd of 7,755 made Saturday the 14th sellout of the season at Parkview Field.
