Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - On the same day he got called up from the AZL Dodgers, Great Lakes Loons starting pitcher Andre Jackson was superb in a 4-1 victory over the Lake County Captains on Saturday at Dow Diamond. The game was played in front of a sold-out crowd of 5,243.
Through 6.0 scoreless innings, Jackson (W, 1-3) allowed three hits and three walks with five strikeouts. It was his first outing without giving up a run since June 14. However, the right-hander would not have been able to get the win if it wasn't for the Loons' (16-26) bats.
In the third inning against Captains (17-24) starter Jean Carlos Mejia, Deacon Liput singled on a line drive to left field to score Gersel Pitre for a 1-0 Loons lead. One inning later, a groundout by Pitre pushed home Miguel Vargas, who tripled earlier in the inning.
Instead of falling off, Meija got into a rhythm. Once the seventh inning began, he started to struggle. Despite retiring two, he put runners on before giving the ball up to Riley Echols. The Loons tacked on two more runs for a 4-0 edge on a two-RBI single from Brock Carpenter against the right-handed reliever.
Vargas was the most impressive hitter of the night for Great Lakes. He went 2-for-4 while Brock Carpenter was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a walk. Other Loons to pick up hits included Amaya, Liput, Pitre and Chris Roller.
Mejia (L, 3-5) finished with a line of 6.2 innings, six hits, three earned runs, three walks and five strikeouts.
Building upon Jackson's solid start was left-hander Austin Drury, who was a 34th round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018. He was perfect through 2.0 innings, punching out four hitters.
The only run scored by the Captains was off the bat of a Jonathan Lauerano double play groundout to score Oscar Gonzalez. However, Loons reliever Stephen Kolek managed to slam the door and secure the win.
The Loons and Captains continue their three-game series on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007.
