West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - Three Beer City Bung Hammers pitchers combined for thirteen strikeouts and power at the plate in a 4-1 victory over the Dayton Dragons in front of 8,502 fans Saturday at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Pitcher Tom de Blok enjoyed another solid start for Beer City, dealing four innings of two-hit baseball while striking out two. Unfortunately, de Blok left the game abruptly with an unspecified injury before the fifth inning, but Endrys Briceno entered in relief and racked up seven straight outs due to strikeouts in three solid innings of relief. The Bung Hammers offense jumped all over Dragons starter Patrick McGuff as a Colby Bortles double and a two-run home run by Brock Deatherage plated four runs in the first three innings. Dylan Rosa continued his hot hitting by setting the table with a three-hit night, including two doubles. The Dragons responded with their lone run in the sixth inning as Dragon 1st round draft pick Jonathan India hit his first home run of the season to cut the Beer City lead to 4-1. Tarik Skubal came on to seal the deal by striking out three through 1.2 innings and picking up the save for a Bung Hammers team enjoying their eighth win over the last nine games.
Briceno (1-1) evened his season record with the win. Only one earned run has scored on the Beer City relief corps over their last 14.1 innings. McGuff (1-3) limped through 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and permitting all four Bung Hammer four runs. The Bung Hammers advance to 57-54 in the second half and currently hold second place and a potential playoff spot in the Eastern Division with a 21-20 record. The Dragons dropped their fourth in five games and fall to 19-23 in the second half and 50-60 in 2018. The Whitecaps and Dayton celebrated their 140th all-time meeting at Fifth Third Ballpark in their history, and the "Caps hold a 90-50 record.
