Quad Cities River Bandits News Release
Peoria, IL - Chandler Taylor's ninth inning home run sent the game to extra-innings and the Bandits held on in the tenth to pull out a series-opening 3-2 win over the Peoria Chiefs on Saturday evening at Dozer Park. The Bandits improved to 6-4 in extra-inning games in 2018.
The River Bandits put a runner in scoring position with no outs in both the fifth and the sixth innings of a scoreless game, but came up empty in each instance. Bandits starter Cesar Rosado was fantastic through five innings, holding the Chiefs without a hit and walking just one batter to keep the game deadlocked in a scoreless tie. In the sixth, Peoria's eight-hitter Brandon Benson opened the frame with a double under the glove of third baseman Alfredo Angarita and down the left field line. Rayder Ascanio followed with a bunt single to place runners on the corners with no outs. Wood Meyers took advantage by lining a single into center field that put Peoria on top 1-0.
Quad Cities was held without a run until the top of the ninth inning. Still trailing 1-0, Taylor worked the count in his favor at 3-1 and then blasted a game-tying solo home run off of the batter's eye in dead center to even the score. The long ball was his fifth of the season.
After Peoria came up empty in the bottom half of the inning, the game moved to extras. Marty Costes opened the frame on second base and promptly scored on a single up the middle from Ruben Castro. Taylor joined Castro on base by working a walk, putting men on first and second. Alfredo Angarita hit a chopper to the right side that eluded the diving Wood Myers at second base and trickled into right field for an error, allowing Castro to score and putting the Bandits on top 3-1.
Willy Collado entered on the mound for the bottom of the inning that began with Nick Plummer on second. The runner tagged and advanced on a fly ball to right by Brandon Benson and then scored on Rayder Ascanio's bouncer to short. Myers dropped a single into shallow right to bring the winning run to the plate, but Collado struck out Luken Baker on a 3-2 slider to end the game.
Rosado ended up tossing 7.0 innings, during which he allowed one run on four hits and struck out six. Humberto Castellanos pitched 2.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen with three strikeouts.
Each team finished with seven hits. Lacroix and Myers both mustered three hits. Castro was the only other member of the Bandits lineup with multiple hits.
The River Bandits (22-18, 62-48) continue the set with the Chiefs (25-14, 64-45) on Sunday afternoon at Dozer Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. The Bandits will hand the ball to RHP Leovanny Rodriguez (4-4, 3.74) on the mound against Peoria RHP Angel Paul Balistrieri (7-4, 4.03).
All River Bandits games are broadcast on 1170 K-BOB and TuneIn Radio. Home games are also available with video on MiLB.TV.
