South Bend Cubs News Release
Bowling Green, KY: After snapping their eight game losing streak last night in the series finale against the Lansing Lugnuts, the South Bend Cubs packed up and bused south to open a three game series against the Bowling Green Hot Rods. With the bats quiet on Saturday night, South Bend struggled to get anything started and were whitewashed 6-0 in game one.
The Cubs have now lost nine of their past ten games. The only win on the extended road trip thus far was last night in Lansing. With tonight's loss, South Bend's record drops to 52-59 on the campaign. It was all Hot Rods from the start on Saturday night against Cubs starter Enrique De Los Rios. De Los Rios, who is now in the starting rotation after pitching out of the bullpen since April, struggled early against a power-packed Bowling Green lineup. With three runs in the bottom of the 1st inning, the Hot Rods quickly put the game away with the game winning run.
The inning started with a triple from the speedy Vidal Brujan. Shortly after, Brujan and Taylor Walls came home to score on a two run single from Moises Gomez. The run by Brujan turned out to be the game winner.
The Hot Rods would add a run in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings to take the 6-0 lead. De Los Rios takes the loss in the series opener, his record falls to 1-3 with a 2.84 ERA.
On the offensive side, the Cubs managed just five total base runners against Bowling Green starter Paul Campbell in six innings. In total, South Bend finished with eight combined baserunners. The hits for South Bend were provided by Rafael Narea, Miguel Amaya, Austin Filiere, Christian Donahue, and Delvin Zinn.
South Bend will hope to get back on the right track with a quick turnaround for game two. First pitch from Bowling Green Ballpark on Sunday is set for 2:05 PM.
