Grand Rapids, Mich. - Three West Michigan pitchers combined to allow just three hits while striking out 12 as the Whitecaps topped the Dayton Dragons 4-1 on Saturday night. The game was the opener to a three-game series in Grand Rapids.

West Michigan took command of the game early, scoring single runs in the first two innings, and then adding two in the third to take a 4-0 lead.

The Dragons scored their only run in the sixth inning on a solo home run to left field by Jonathan India. The homer was the first with the Dragons for India, the Reds first round draft pick earlier this summer.

Dragons starting pitcher Patrick McGuff (1-3) endured his first rough start with the team and was charged with the loss. He worked two and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and no strikeouts. He also committed a balk that brought in a run.

The Dragons bullpen had a good night, keeping the team within striking distance. Wendolyn Bautista worked three and one-third scoreless innings, allowing just one base runner. Aaron Quillen followed Bautista and worked two perfect innings, striking out one.

But the Dragons could not mount a productive attack at the plate. After India's homer in the sixth, they did advance runners to third base later in the sixth and again in the eighth inning, but they could not get the big hit.

The Dragons finished the night with only five hits. Alejo Lopez was 1 for 4 to extend his hitting streak to eight straight games.

In the Standings: The Dragons dropped to 19-23 in the second half. They began the night one-half game behind Fort Wayne in the Midwest League's East Division Second Half wildcard race (#2 seed). There are 28 games to play.

Up Next: The Dragons and Whitecaps (21-20) will battle in the second game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m. Jared Solomon will make his first start for the Dragons after being called up from Billings, where he was the Pioneer League co-leader in strikeouts and ranked third in the league in earned run average. He will be opposed by West Michigan's Wilkel Hernandez (1-4, 5.66).

Game Broadcast: All Dragons games are broadcast on radio on Fox Sports 980 WONE and on the internet at wone.com. Games are also available on the Dayton Dragons mobile app.
