Second-Inning Slam Halts Win Streak
May 1, 2019 - Eastern League (EL1)
Trenton Thunder News Release
A grand slam by Alberto Mineo delivered the decisive blow in a 4-1 Thunder loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Wednesday at ARM & HAMMER Park.
Making his first double-A start of the season, Thunder right-hander Deivi Garcia (0-1) issued a leadoff walk to Gunnar Heidt in the second inning. After striking out the next two batters, Garcia hit Forrest Wall with a pitch and allowed an infield single to Santiago Espinal, loading the bases. Mineo then cleared the right field wall with a grand slam, giving the Fisher Cats (12-13) a 4-0 lead.
Garcia lasted four innings, walking five (matching a career-high) and striking out 11, accounting for 11 of his 12 outs recorded.
The Thunder (15-8) manufactured their only run in the fifth inning, as Hoy Jun Park lined a one-out single and later scored on an infield single by Ben Ruta. The team left two runners stranded in four different innings and went 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
Ruta collected two hits in the game, extending his on-base streak to a team-best 10 games.
Will Carter and Domingo Acevedo combined for five innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits from the fifth inning onward. The relief effort included a streak of 12 consecutive batters retired by Thunder pitching from the fifth to the ninth.
Yennsy Diaz (2-2) earned the win for New Hampshire, scattering six hits over five innings of work. Relievers Jake Fishman, Bryan Baker, and Kirby Snead held the Thunder to just two hits over the final four innings.
The loss ended the Thunder win streak at five games, which matched a season-best.
