SeaWolves Walk off on Senators
August 29, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves jumped ahead early, battled rain and lost a six-run lead, only to walk off on the Harrisburg Senators, 7-6, on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park.
Erie got out to a commanding first inning lead against Senators starter John Simms. Wynton Bernard led off with a base hit and stole second. It was his 40th steal of the season and becomes just the fourth player in SeaWolves history with 40+ steals in a single season. With one out, Jeff McVaney singled home Bernard making it 1-0. With two outs, Jason Krizan and Alberto Gonzalez each walked loading the bases for Austin Green. Green sent a bouncer to third and on the play to second, Gonzalez reached safely, allowing McVaney to score for a 2-0 advantage. Connor Harrell followed and drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Krizan for a 3-0 lead. A pair of RBI singles from Wade Gaynor and JaCoby Jones, coupled with a Bernard bases loaded walk, gave the SeaWovles a 6-0 lead.
The Senators answered in the fourth as Wilmer Difo and Brian Goodwin opened the frame with back-to-back base hits off of SeaWolves starter Tommy Collier. Chris Bostick doubled home Difo making it 6-1. Shawn Pleffner then reached on a catchers interference that loaded the bases. Collier then issued a pair of bases loaded walks to make it a 6-3 game. Drew Vettleson lifted a sacrifice fly to left, plating Pleffner, cutting the Erie lead down to a pair of runs.
The Senators continued to close the gap in the fifth. With two outs, Bostick and Pleffner each singled putting runners on the corners. A Collier balk allowed Bostick to score making it 6-5.
Harrisburg tied the game in the eighth against reliever Gabe Hemmer. Vettleson walked and was doubled home by Adrian Sanchez, tying the game.
The game remained tied into the bottom of the ninth. With one out, Bernard walked and reached base for the fourth time in the game. Jones followed with a base hit moving Bernard to third. McVaney then delivered the walkoff hit as he singled home Bernard for the 7-6 win.
