Flying Squirrels win over RubberDucks
August 29, 2015 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Summary
Richmond's Ricky Oropesa slugged a pair of homers, including a third-inning grand slam, as the Flying Squirrels slipped by the Akron RubberDucks, 5-3, on Saturday night at Canal Park.
Turning Point
After smashing a solo homer off the batter's eye in center field in the second inning, Oropesa came to the plate in the third with the bases loaded against Indians right-hander Gavin Floyd, who was making an injury rehab start for Akron. After working a 1-1 count, Oropesa launched a grand slam that banged off the bottom of the scoreboard in right field to extend Richmond's lead to 5-1. It was Oropesa's 15th homer of the year, and his third of the series.
Mound Presence
Floyd (0-1) worked the first 2 2/3 innings on a rehab assignment as he works his way back from an elbow fracture suffered in spring training. He gave up five hits and five runs with one walk and three strikeouts. He was lifted after serving up the grand slam to Oropesa. Right-hander Mike Clevinger entered the game in the fourth inning and tossed six shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out seven. For Richmond, starter Joan Gregorio (3-2) earned the win by working five innings and allowing three runs. Closer Derek Law picked up his second save in the series, and 10th overall, with a scoreless ninth.
Duck Tales
Carlos Moncrief smacked a solo homer in the second against Gregorio. It was his fourth of the season, and tied the game briefly at 1-1. Yandy Diaz was 2-3, with a walk, and raised his average to .313, which ranks 3rd in the EL. Jeremy Lucas had a two-hit night, going 2-4, with a double and RBI. Bradley Zimmer was 2-4, with a stolen base.
