Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
BINGHAMTON, NY - Rainy Lara struck out seven over seven innings and Brock Peterson drove in three runs to push the Binghamton Mets to a 6-3 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in front of 4,997 at NYSEG Stadium on Saturday night. Binghamton earned their fourth straight win and lowered their magic number to clinch a playoff berth to six.
Trailing by pair after Melky Mesa's two-run homer in the top of the first, Binghamton jumped on Fisher Cats starter Conner Greene in their first turn at the plate. With two aboard, Peterson dumped an RBI double inside the right-field line. Vince Belnome followed with a line-drive RBI single to right and Joe Benson pushed Binghamton ahead on a run-producing fielder's choice.
Jared King stretched out Binghamton's lead with a sacrifice fly to left field in the third. Jonathan Galvez raced home from third, tumbling across the plate ahead of Mesa's throw to extend Binghamton's lead. Peterson added an RBI single in the fourth inning, his second hit of the game.
Lara settled in after surrendering Mesa's two-run blast in the first. The righty faced one over the minimum over three scoreless innings before surrendering consecutive one-out singles in the fifth. Lara escaped harm, and started a stretch of eight straight retired batters, by putting down the next two hitters. He ended his night with two perfect innings.
The Fisher Cats touched Josh Smoker for a run in the eighth, but Binghamton answered with an RBI single by Peterson in the bottom of the inning. Jon Velasquez worked a perfect ninth to collect his 18th save of the season.
Lara (8-5) allowed two runs on six hits over seven innings to earn his third win in four starts. He struck out seven, a Double-A career-high, for the fifth time as a B-Met. Greene (2-1) was tagged for four runs on eight hits and lasted three innings in his first loss as a Fisher Cat.
The B-Mets (73-59) conclude their four-game set against the Double-A Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM. RHP Robert Gsellman takes the mound against RHP Casey Lawrence. The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pregame Show can be heard starting at 12:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF and the Binghamton Mets channel on TuneIn.
