Erie SeaWolves News Release
Despite a well pitched game by Erie starter Patrick Cooper, the SeaWolves dropped the opener of Friday nights doubleheader to the Binghamton Mets 2-0.
Binghamton scored the games only runs in the bottom of the first inning off of Cooper. Juan Lagares led off with a single and Reese Havens walked. Wilmer Flores cleared the bases with a triple, giving the Mets a 2-0 lead.
The SeaWolves had runners in scoring position against Mets starter Cory Mazzoni in three innings but could not cash in.
Cooper (2-3) tossed a complete game and he retired the final 18 Mets hitters of the game, only to take the loss. Cooper has received just one run combined of support in his last two starts.
GAME TWO
The SeaWolves nearly pulled off an amazing come from behind win in game two of Friday's doubleheader, only to suffer a walk-off loss in extra innings against the Mets 5-4.
The Mets again struck first in the bottom of the first against Erie spot starter David Kopp. Juan Lagares led off with a single, stole second and scored on a two-out Allan Dykstra single for a 1-0 lead.
Binghamton added to its lead in the third. Lagares led off with a single and Mike Fisher connected on a two-run home run to right for a 3-0 lead.
Erie finally struck back in the top of the fourth against Mets starter Mark Cohoon. Avisail Garcia single with one out and moved from first to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Cohoon. Garcia scored on a Rawley Bishop base hit to make it 3-1.
The Mets got the run right back in the bottom of the fourth as Jefry Marte led off with a solo home run off of Ryan Robowski.
The SeaWolves trailed into the seventh inning against Mets reliever Robert Carson. Brandon Douglas doubled with one out and with two outs, Wes Thigpen nailed a single off of Carson to keep the game going. Jamie Johnson singled home Douglas making it a two-run game at 4-2. Niuman Romero followed with a bases clearing double over the head of Lagares in center, tying the game.
The Mets won the game in the bottom of the eighth against Erie reliever Michael Morrison. Wilmer Flores led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second. After a Dykstra intentional walk to set up a double play, Marte nailed a game-winning RBI single to the alley in right-center, giving the Mets the 5-4 win.
The 'Wolves and Mets will meet in the fourth game of a five-game series on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium.7:05 First Pitch. Righty James Avery (9-6, 4.40 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Zack Wheeler (8-4, 2.62 ERA).
