SeaWolves Sink Contreras in Series Opener

CURVE, PA - Right-hander Roansy Contreras allowed his first runs of the season in a 5-1 loss to the Erie SeaWolves on Tuesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field.

Contreras fired a 1-2-3 first inning with a pair of strikeouts before Erie's bats got to him in the second. Josh Lester began the frame with a triple, and he crossed home when Dylan Rosa reached on an error by SS Oneil Cruz. After a strikeout of Kona Quiggle, Jon Rosoff singled and Dane Myers followed with a laser shot two-run home run to make it 3-0.

The runs in the second inning marked the end of an 18.2 scoreless innings streak to start the season for the league's reigning Pitcher of the Week.

Contreras was touched for two more runs in the third inning as he lost command of the strike zone and issued three walks. The 21-year-old had walked three batters total in his first three starts of the season before issuing three walks and a single in the third leading to two more runs to make it 5-0.

The Curve got managed just three hits in the defeat, but one of them was a laser home run shot off the Skyliner rollercoaster off the bat of Cal Mitchell. Mitchell's homer in the fourth inning was his third of the season. Brendt Citta and Arden Pabst added singles in the defeat. Altoona managed four walks off the Erie pitching staff of Pedro Payano, Cale Coshow, Gerson Moreno and Ethan DeCaster.

Following the four inning start from Contreras, the Curve bullpen delivered six scoreless innings of relief. Cam Vieaux, John O'Reilly and Shea Murray combined to allow just three hits, two walks and struck out six. Curve pitching struck out 12 batters on Tuesday night, the 13th time in 18 games this season in which the staff has struck out ten or more batters in a game.

The Curve continue their six-game series on Wednesday night at Peoples Natural Gas Field at 6:00 p.m. with the Erie SeaWolves. RHP Travis MacGregor (0-1, 3.38) will make his fourth start of the season, Erie will start RHP Ricardo Pinto (1-1, 3.68).
