SeaWolves Fall to Thunder in Extras
May 26, 2018 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
Despite a late rally by the SeaWolves, Erie dropped their fifth straight game Saturday in extras to the Trenton Thunder 4-1.
Trenton led 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a Jeff Hendrix home run in the sixth off of Kyle Funkhouser. With one out, Dominic Ficociello cracked a double on Caleb Frare into right field. After a Jake Rogers strikeout, Chad Sedio bounced a dribbler in the infield grass to first. While attempting to field the grounder, Trenton first baseman Chris Gittens slipped in the grass and could not lob a throw to first. Danny Woodrow then smoked an RBI single to right field to tie the game at 1-1. Alcantara went down looking and the game was headed to extras.
Erie had their best chance to win in the bottom of the 10th. Will Maddox singled up the middle, but Gosuke Katoh slung the ball home to trap Alcantara in a run down for the second out. With Maddox on second, Josh Lester took a strikeout looking to end the 10th.
Trey Amburgey blasted a three run home run off of Ecker to elevate the Thunder in the 11th, and the SeaWolves could not answer in the home half to fall four the fifth straight time.
Frare (2-0) earned the win for the Thunder while Ecker fell to 2-4 with the loss.
Kyle Funkhouser worked in a quality start for 6.0 IP, four hits and only one earned run on a home run.
The SeaWolves return to UPMC Park to face the Thunder at 1:35 PM on Sunday. Lefty Tyler Alexander (3-1, 3.02 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Jonathan Loaisiga (1-0, 2.08 ERA).
