Reading Sweeps the 'Dogs, 3-2 and 6-3

Portland, Maine - The Reading Fightin Phils (19-27) swept a doubleheader over the Sea Dogs (16-31) on Saturday afternoon at Hadlock Field. Reading took game one 3-2 in eight innings and won game two 6-3.

GAME 1 RECAP

The Sea Dogs rallied late to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh, but the Fightin Phils prevailed 3-2 in extra innings in game one of the twin bill.

After a leadoff single by Damek Tomscha in the top of the eighth off of Daniel McGrath (L, 1-1), Zach Green singled to score the automatic baserunner Kyle Martin and give Reading the go-ahead run. Green also homered in the game and finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Portland had tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh on a wild pitch by Franklyn Kilome to score pinch runner Jeremy Rivera. Josh Ockimey had led off the inning with a walk.

Edgar Garcia (3-1) earned the win and pitched the final 1.1 innings, stranding 2 baserunners each in the seventh and eighth.

Kilome had the start for Reading and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits in 6.2 innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Sea Dogs starter Dedgar Jimenez earned his second quality start of the year and tied a season-high with seven innings pitched. Jimenez allowed two runs on seven hits and fanned four while walking three.

GAME 2 RECAP

Reading jumped out to a 4-0 lead seven batters into the game and held on for 6-3 win in game two.

Malquin Canelo led off the ballgame with a solo homer off of Travis Lakins (L, 0-2), then later in the inning Cord Sandberg delivered an RBI single and Jan Hernandez shot a ball into the gap for a two-run double.

The Sea Dogs halved the deficit in the fourth on a bases loaded single by Jhon Nunez that scored two. Portland scored again on an RBI groundout by Jantzen Witte in the fifth to make it 4-3, but Reading quickly answered in the top of the sixth on a sac fly by Cord Sandberg and an RBI single by Hernandez.

Ranfi Casimero (1-1) earned the win in relief, the righty worked 1.2 innings and allowed a run on a hit. Reading starter Elneiry Garcia went 3.1 innings and allowed two runs on four hits.

Travis Lakins (L, 0-2) allowed four runs on four hits over his three innings, he walked one and fanned five. Josh Taylor pitched two perfect innings of relief and struck out four, Trevor Kelley pitched the final two frames and allowed two runs on three hits. Sea Dogs' pitchers combined to work five perfect innings, but Reading did all their damage in the first (four runs) and the sixth (two runs).

The Sea Dogs and Fightins play game four of their series on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 PM. Lefty Kyle Hart (2-3, 3.68) makes his eighth start of the season for the Sea Dogs.
