Seager, Anderson Lead Drillers to Win
April 14, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
Tulsa Drillers News Release
Corey Seager continued his torrid start to the season Tuesday afternoon for the Tulsa Drillers, collecting three more hits, but more importantly, providing his first home run of the season. The solo shot gave the Drillers a lead they would not relinquish as they defeated Corpus Christi 2-1 at ONEOK Field.
On a day when offense was at a premium, Seager deposited a fifth-inning delivery from Aaron West into the Hooks' bullpen in deep, right-center field to break a scoreless deadlock. The blast gave Tulsa a lead it would hold onto, sending Corpus Christi to its first loss of the season.
The victory allowed the Drillers to finish the opening homestand of the season with a 3-3 record.
Seager, who entered the game hitting .550, actually raised his average with the three hits. The shortstop has hit safely in five of six games this season, recording at least two hits in each. He now has one four-hit game and two three-hit games and is leading the Texas League with a .583 average.
Starting pitcher Chris Anderson turned in his second solid performance of the season and picked up the win to improve his record to 2-0. Anderson allowed only two hits in six shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.64 over 11 innings pitched.
Mike Thomas followed Anderson to the mound and retired all six batters he faced in two perfect innings.
Seager struck again in the bottom of the eighth to give closer Blake Smith a valuable insurance run. With one out, Peter Lavin doubled before Seager brought him home with his third hit of the day.
Smith took over for Thomas to open the ninth and allowed a one-out home run to Houston Astros top prospect Carlos Correa that trimmed the lead to 2-1. Smith got the second out of the inning before consecutive singles put runners at the corners. With the potential tying run just 90 feet away, Smith struck out Conrad Gregor on a 3-2 breaking pitch to end the threat and the game.
The Drillers will have a travel day before beginning a six-game road trip Thursday night in San Antonio. In game one of a three-game set with the Missions, Julio Urias (0-0, 0.00) will make his second start of the season for Tulsa against Colin Rea (0-0, 0.00) of San Antonio. The two pitchers met last week at ONEOK Field with the Missions claiming a narrow 1-0 win.
Starting time for the opener in San Antonio is scheduled for 7:05PM.
