Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
TULSA, OK - Carlos Correa's three-run double and another solid effort by the Hooks bullpen paved the way toward a 6-3 win over Tulsa Monday night at ONEOK Field.
Corpus Christi is now 5-0 to begin a season for the first time since 2008.
The Hooks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second. Telvin Nash lined a lead-off single into left and then Matt Shelton issued consecutive walks to Tyler Heineman and Jon Kemmer, bringing Brandon Meredith to the plate. Meredith sent a 2-1 pitch into right for a two-run single.
The Drillers (2-3) tied the score in the third when Daniel Mayora belted a two-out, two-run double over the head of Leo Heras in center.
Corpus Christi responded in the fourth thanks to an RBI single by Jio Mier.
Brandon Dixon opened the home half with a home run to left off Mike Hauschild, leveling the score at 3.
Hauschild (1-0) struck out two in the fifth to complete his outing. He fanned eight on the night and did not issue a walk.
Tulsa reliever Chin-hui Tsao got the first out in the sixth but then issued three consecutive walks. Meredith was caught stealing second, limiting the traffic to two base runners. Chris Reed was lifted for Tsao and promptly doled out a free pass to Tony Kemp. Correa, who was hitless in his prior eight at-bats, then drove a 2-1 pitch to dead central, clearing the bases.
Correa now has six hits, all doubles, and leads the Texas League with eight RBIs.
Mitch Lambson struck out three over 2.0-plus innings and Jandel Gustave authored a scoreless eighth. Tyson Perez, making back-to-back appearances, notched his first save of the year.
Hooks shoot for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon. Chris Anderson (1-0, 3.60) pitches for Tulsa and the tandem of Aaron West and Kent Emanuel (0-0, 7.36) is slated for Corpus Christi. Start time is 12:05 and the game will be carried on 1400 KUNO-AM.
