Travis Lisabeth scored a game-tying goal in the second period before adding the shootout winner as the Mississippi Sea Wolves knocked off the South Carolina Stingrays to win their fifth consecutive game in front of 2,826 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Tuesday.
The Sea Wolves opened the scoring when South Carolina defenseman Scott Romfo fired a cross-ice pass off the skate of Stingrays' goaltender Josh Johnson that wound up in the Stingrays' net. The goal at 7:10 of the first period was credited to Marek Kvapil. South Carolina drew even when Trent Campbell found crafty veteran Cail MacLean with a back-door pass that MacLean fired past Sea Wolves goaltender Ryan Munce for a power-play at 17:06 of the first period.
Marty Guerin gave South Carolina the lead on the power-play when he one-timed a pass from Pierre-Luc O'Brien past Munce at 14:23 of the second period. The Sea Wolves drew even when Travis Lisabeth broke down the right wing and found the top corner over the glove of Johnson at 18:19. Mississppi would score again to take a 3-2 lead just eight seconds later when Ryan Menei picked up the rebound of Jason Tejchma's shot at 18:27.
Trent Campbell drew South Carolina even at three when his shot from the top of the left circle handcuffed Ryan Munce at 3:04 of the third period. The game remained tied through the remainder of the third period and overtime, until Travis Lisabeth beat Johnson with a wrist shot from the low slot in the bottom of the fifth round of the shootout.
Saturday, January 12 @ Augusta, 1-4 L
The Augusta Lynx stopped the Mississippi Sea Wolves winning streak at five, defeating the Sea Wolves 4-1 at the James Brown Arena in Augusta, Georgia on Saturday evening.
After a two hour and eight minute delay due to poor ice conditions, the game finally got underway at 9:18 p.m. Augusta got on the board early when Louis Goulet found the back of the net on the rebound of a blocked shot at the 6:11 mark of the first period. Chase Trull answered back for Mississippi at 16:16 of the first, one-timing a pass from Torry Gajda past Augusta's Bobby Goepfert. Augusta regained the lead when Aaron Slattengren tipped Brian Yandle's shot past Cey at 19:33 of the first.
Augusta added a shorthand goal in the third period when Matt Christie pushed a loose puck past the Mississippi defense, Geoff Peters grabbed the loose disk and beat Morgan Cey to the glove side at 7:19 of the third period. Augusta added an insurance goal when Matt Auffrey hammered home a back-door pass from Slattengren at 10:54 of the third.
