Wheeling Nailers News Release
Wheeling, WV - The Wheeling Nailers suffered a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the visiting Mississippi Sea Wolves Saturday night at WesBanco Arena in front of 3500 plus fans . The Sea Wolves scored two goals in the third period to pull off the comeback. It was Mississippi's first win since Jan. 25.
The loss sent the Nailers back to a tie with the Johnstown Chiefs in the North Division, who defeated the Reading Royals, 5-3.
The Nailers came out strong in the first period, getting the first goal of the game from Jordan Morrison on assists from Erik Johnson and Bryan Ewing. The goal was Morrison's 17th of the season.
The Sea Wolves evened the contest at 1-1 on a power-play goal by Mathieu Melanson, but the Nailers reclaimed the lead when newly acquired winger Bo Cheesman hit the twine at the 9:53 mark. Defenseman Elgin Reid scored his 11th marker of the season with just over two minutes remaining in the first period to give the Nailers a 2-goal lead.
After Mississippi scored their second goal in the second period, Melanson would scored the game-tying goal, his second of the game, early in the third period. Mississippi got the game-winner from Ryan Cruthers at the 6:24 mark of the third period on assists from Jeff Kyrzakos and Alexandre Parent. It was Cruthers' 19th goal of the season, and he also added two assists on the night.
The shots were even at 28 apiece, but Wheeling went just 1-for-5 on the man advantage.
The Nailers have five days off before they host the Dayton Bombers on Friday, Feb. 6. They host the Elmira Jackals the following night. The Feb. 6 game is Family 4-Pack Night. Fans get four tickets, four hot dogs and a large popcorn for only $44. The Feb. 7 game is U.S. Army Nailers Camo Hat Giveaway to the first 2,500 fans in attendance.
