Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs won their eleventh straight game against Reading dating back to last season with a 5-3 triumph on Saturday night.
The Chiefs are now 26-16-2 with 54 points as they chase Wheeling for first place in the North Division.
The first period was a back-and-forth affair for most of the time, and shots were even at nine a side as the final minutes ticked off. But Marty Mjelleli fired a turning wrist shot past Michael Ouzas for his first professional goal and a 1-0 Johnstown lead. Greg Gallagher made it two for the home team with his third goal of the season 36 seconds later. With an assist on Mjelleli's goal, Gallagher earned his first multi-point game of the season.
The Chiefs would waste no time extending their lead at the start of the second. When Jarrett Konkle missed the net with a wrist shot, the rebound caromed off of the endboards to the front of the net. Ryan Del Monte was right there to slide the puck home 33 seconds into the period. Ryan Card also assisted for his first pro point. Dan Rudisuela redirected a Brock Hooton past behind Kris Mayotte three minutes later to put the Royals on the board.
The Chiefs entered the third up by two, but quickly found themselves up by four. Toby Lafrance's first goal as a Chief came 13 seconds into the final frame. It was the quickest goal to begin a period this season for Johnstown. Todd Griffith followed on for his second goal in three games at 5:37. Blair Yaworski and Petr Pohl earned the assists as Pohl extended his point streak to eight games. Chris Stevens and Rudisuela scored as the Royals tried to come back, but the Chiefs' lead was too formidable.
Mayotte turned in an impressive 36-save performance, including stopping a Hooton penalty shot in the first period for his 18th win of the season while the Chiefs' power play went 0-for-7.
Mark your calendars, the Chiefs are back on home ice on Friday, February 13 as they take on the Reading Royals at 7:05. The game will feature the Chiefs Team Poster Giveaway sponsored by the US Army. The first 1,500 fans through the door will take home the free poster. Act fast and be sure to get your seat by calling 814-539-1799 or 814-536-5156.
