Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
FAIRBORN, Ohio - A three goal third period explosion propelled the Cincinnati Cyclones to a 6-4 win over the Dayton Bombers. Mike Salekin had a goal and an assist for the Cyclones, who won their eighth game in nine tries. Cincinnati finishes January with a perfect 6-0 road record and sent Dayton to its eighth straight decision without a victory (0-7-1).
Cincinnati raced to a 3-0 lead before Dayton closed the gap to 3-2 after 20 minutes of play. Justin Johnson netted his eighth goal of the season at 7:23 from Barret Ehgoetz. Just 31 seconds later, at 7:54, Mike Salekin snapped a shot from the high slot past goaltender Paul Drew to open a 2-0 edge. Salekin's seventh goal of the year came from Jimmy Kilpatrick and Mark Van Guilder. Ben Gordon picked up his eighth goal on the power play, sneaking a shot just inside the right side post to extend the lead to 3-0 at 10:03. Salekin handed out the helper on the score. Dayton got goals 32 seconds apart to draw closer. Mike McLean's 16th came at 16:52 and Dan Riedel's 18th arrived at 17:24. The period ended with Cincinnati on top, 3-2. Dayton outshot the Cyclones, 14-11, in the first stanza.
In a physical second period, Dayton scored the only goal to tie the game at 3-3. Former Cyclone Greg Labenski's sixth goal of the game at 11:46 on the power play knotted the score. The shots on goal in the second period were even also at eleven each.
For the 15th time in 2008-09, the Cyclones scored three goals in a period to pull away from Dayton. Jimmy Kilpatrick's 21st goal at 11:35 regained the lead as Salekin and Van Guilder handed out the assists. The Bombers tied the game at four when Tomas Zaborsky collected his tenth goal of the year at 14:49. A bit more than a minute later, Cyclones captain Barret Ehgoetz picked up his 18th goal of the season, firing from the top of the goal crease from Dustin Sproat and Justin Johnson. That would prove to be the winning goal. Ben Gordon's second of the night and ninth of the year closed out the scoring in the 6-4 game with an empty net effort at 19:46. The shot on goal favored Dayton, 9-7, in the period and 34-29, for the game.
Loic Lacasse won for the second straight night, stopping 30 shots. Paul Drew was the loser for the second straight night, turning aside 23 shots.
The Cyclones are now 24-16-5 on the season, while Dayton is 21-20-5. The Cyclones host Reading on Tuesday at U.S. Bank Arena at 7:30pm. It is a Big Beer Tuesday with Labatts 24 ounce beers priced at two dollars.
