Sea Dogs Walk-Off in 6-5 Win

Portland, Maine - Devlin Granberg collected three hits, an RBI, and scored two runs as the Portland Seadogs (5-5) won in walk-off fashion, 6-5, against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (3-6) on Tuesday at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine.

Three runs scored for Binghamton in the top of the first against Portland starter Jay Groome. With one out, Francisco Alvarez singled, and Brett Baty followed with a walk. Ronny Mauricio doubled to right, scoring Alvarez and giving the Rumble Ponies a 1-0 lead. Luke Ritter continued to add offense with a walk to load the bases. Johneshwy Fargas walked in the next at-bat, pushing in the second run and increasing the Binghamton lead to 2-0. Mauricio scored the last run of the inning on a balk, ending the first with a 3-0 advantage.

The Sea Dogs entered the scoring column in the bottom of the third against Rumble Ponies starter Mitch Ragan. David Hamilton worked a one out walk and Christian Koss drove him in with a double to left, cutting into Binghamton's lead, 3-1. After Granberg reached on a fielder's choice, Tyler Dearden brought in Koss with a sacrifice fly to left, making the score 3-2.

The offense kept rolling for the Sea Dogs in the bottom of the fifth with Rumble Ponies reliever Kevin Gadea on the mound. Granberg grounded a one out single to left and Dearden walked to put runners at first and second. Kole Cottam knocked in Granberg with a single to center, tying the game 3-3. Cameron Cannon added to the score with a base hit to center, scoring Dearden to take the lead 4-3.

Portland added to their score in the bottom of the sixth with Gadea still on the bump. Nick Sogard walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a steal. Sogard moved up to third on a wild pitch and Granberg tripled to right, expanding the Sea Dogs lead, 5-3.

The Rumble Ponies stormed back in the top of the seventh against Sea Dogs reliever Chase Shugart. Alvarez walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a Baty base hit. Mauricio advanced both with a ground ball. Alvarez came in to score on a wild pitch and Baty advanced to third. Fargas walked, and on the next play, Baty scored on an error by shortstop Christian Koss, tying the game 5-5.

In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Sea Dogs walked it off against Rumble Ponies reliever Michel Otanez. Granberg led off the inning with a double to left. In the next at-bat, Dearden intentionally walked, putting runners at first and second. Kole Cottam stepped up to the plate and grounded a ball to second base, Binghamton second basemen Luke Ritter made a fielding error and Granberg scored, ending the game, 6-5.

Frank German (2-0) tossed 1.0 perfect inning with three strikeouts while picking up his second win of the campaign. Otanez (0-1) pitched a third of an inning, surrendering one unearned run on one hit with one walk in his first loss of the year.

The Sea Dogs and Rumble Ponies play the second game of a six-game series on Wednesday with a 6:00 PM ET first pitch. Portland sends LHP Chris Murphy (0-0, 3.00 ERA) to the mound against Binghamton's RHP Jose Butto (0-1, 1.08 ERA).
