Hartford Yard Goats News Release

Hartford, Conn. - The Hartford Yard Goats defeated the Somerset Patriots 4-0 on Tuesday evening at Dunkin' Donuts Park. Karl Kauffmann (1-0, 0.84 ERA) threw six no-hit innings with nine strikeouts and Michael Toglia's two-hit, three RBI night fueled the offense.

Kauffmann weathered a walk and two hard-hit fly outs to the warning track in the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, a fielding error by second baseman Derek Dietrich put leadoff hitter Isaac Collins on first. Collins stole second and later advanced to third on a Willie MacIver single. With the bases loaded and the centerfielder drawn in, Toglia smacked a bases-clearing, one-out double to the wall to put Hartford ahead 3-0.

Hartford's 2019 second-round pick retired the Patriots in order in the second, struck out the side in the third and set down Somerset on six pitches in the fourth inning. Kauffmann's streak of 11-straight hitters retired was ended by a leadoff walk to Elijah Dunham in the fifth. Kauffmann then picked Dunham off of first base, struck out Brandon Lockridge and worked around another walk to retire the side.

Riley Pint came on in relief of Kauffmann in the seventh and gave up Somerset's hardest-hit ball since the first - a sinking line drive by Dunham that Montes speared with a diving catch to his right. In the eighth, Nick Kennedy gave up the no-hit bid on a single by Jeisson Rosario but got out of the inning unscathed. Somerset native Gavin Hollowell notched his first save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The Yard Goats got the leadoff man on base in the first, fifth and sixth inning. Toglia ripped a triple to center in the sixth and scored on a Brenton Doyle sacrifice fly to make it 4-0. Doyle finished 1-3 with an RBI. Every Hartford position player recorded a hit, and Jameson Hannah went 2-3 with two singles and a walk.

Shortstop Anthony Volpe was the main attraction for Somerset but was stifled by Hartford pitching all night long. The Yankees top prospect led off the game with a three-pitch strikeout and went down swinging two other times before flying out in the eighth.

The Yard Goats (5-5) and Patriots (6-4) play again tomorrow, April 20 (7:05 ET) at Dunkin' Donuts Park. RHP Mitch Kilkenny will start for Hartford, and RHP Mitch Spence will start for Somerset. The game will be broadcast on Newsradio 1410 WPOP.
