(Portland, ME) - The Altoona Curve (45-65) used a 6-run fourth inning to grab the opener from the Portland Sea Dogs (51-57) 12-6 on Tuesday night at Hadlock Field in front of a sellout crowd of 7,368. The Sea Dogs suffered their 3rd straight loss and are 2-6 during their 26-game stretch against the Southern Division.
Altoona struck a franchise record 10 doubles and sent Portland 6-games under .500 for the first time this season.
Portland starter RHP Jarod Plummer (7-6) suffered his worse loss of the season, allowing a season high in hits (10) and runs (8) in only 3.1 IP. Plummer left the game in the fourth inning after a run-scoring double by 3B Pedro Alvarez. Altoona righty Mike Crotta (5-6) earned the win for the visitors, working 5+ innings on seven hits, three runs, three walks and seven strikeouts.
2B Ray Chang and SS Brian Friday struck RBI doubles in the first inning to put Altoona in front 2-0. The Curve had six hits during their 6-run fourth inning and sent 9 men to the plate. C Steve Lerud knocked in the first run with a ground out. Former Sea Dog LF Jeff Corsaletti was hit-by-a-pitch and CF Gorkys Hernandez followed with a run-scoring single. Chang's 2-run double gave Altoona a 7-0 advantage.
LF Ryan Kalish, who has hit safely in 14 of 15 games, drove in Portland's first run with a solo-homer to right field. The Curve responded with 3 runs in the sixth inning off RHP Richie Lentz. Lerud knocked in the ninth run when he was hit and Corsaletti drove a 2-run double to left-center field.
Portland hit two more home runs off Altoona's bullpen. 3B Iggy Suarez cracked a 3-run homer over the Maine Monster to cut the deficit to 11-2. 3B Jorge Jimenez led off the seventh inning with a solo shot into Portland's bullpen. Alvarez knocked in the final run with a solo-homer off RHP Bryce Cox in the 9th inning.
The Sea Dogs and Curve meet in game 2 of the series on Wednesday night beginning at 7:00 from Hadlock Field. RHP Ryne Lawson (2-9, 6.29) makes his 17th start of the season against LHP Kyle Bloom, who gets his 17th start of the year for Altoona. Notes...Plummer's 3.1 IP were the shortest outing for a starter since July 12 when RHP Ryne Lawson lasted only 3 IP...C Luis Exposito was assigned to Portland from High-A Salem before the game - LHP Tommy Hottovy was placed on the disabled list...Altoona's 10 doubles and 1 home run were the most extra-base hits in franchise history since 2004 when they had 10 at Hadlock Field.
