Back on Top...The Aeros won yet again Sunday evening in Binghamton by the final score of 3-2, earning their second straight sweep and seventh victory in a row by holding off the B-Mets at NYSEG Stadium. Akron struck first in the top of the first inning as a Jose Constanza single and a pair of walks loaded the bases with no outs. Mets starter Brad Holt then walked Carlos Santana to score Constanza, while a Beau Mills sacrifice fly made it 2-0. John Drennen would then score Mills on a sac fly of his own in the sixth to give the Aeros a three-run cushion, but Binghamton responded against Akron reliever Steven Wright. A single and a walk began the bottom of the seventh, and the two runs came home on an Emmanuel Garcia sacrifice fly and an RBI double by Jose Coronado. That would be all of the drama for the night however, as Binghamton failed to cut the deficit further and Josh Judy struck out four in the final two frames for his fifth save of the season.
Glorious Gomez...Getting the starting nod Sunday for the Aeros was All-Star Jeanmar Gomez, who finished one out shy of his ninth quality start in earning his ninth victory. The 6'4" native of Venezuela matched a season-high with eight strikeouts in the contest and held the B-Mets to just four hits in 5.2 innings of shutout baseball. It was his third win in four starts but just his first road victory since June 17th at New Hampshire, as he is now 4-1 with a 4.66 ERA in eight outings away from Canal Park. Just 21 years old, Gomez's 11 wins between Class A Kinston and Akron are the most in the Indians Player Development System while the right-hander also currently leads all Cleveland minor leaguers with 123.0 innings pitched in 21 starts.
Big Mac on Fire...The hottest player in the Binghamton series was LF Matt McBride, who tied a franchise-record Friday with eight RBI in Akron's 16-3 victory. The 24-year-old then struck again Sunday against the Mets, finishing 2-4 with a pair of doubles and now ranks third in all of minor league baseball with 36 doubles in 98 games played. In fact, all of his hits in the series went for extra bases, and the last single for the Lehigh University product was two weeks ago June 21st against Erie.
Get out the Brooms...Sunday's victory gave Akron its second straight sweep, this time courtesy of the last-place team in the Northern Division. Earlier last week, Akron secured their first four-game sweep in almost 13 months by sweeping through third-place Erie at Canal Park. The Aeros have out-scored their opponents 61-18 in these seven victories and have done that by getting on the scoreboard early and often. In the first three innings alone, Akron holds a 29-2 advantage.
Wild, Wild West...Cleveland starter Jake Westbrook joins the Aeros roster today and will make his third Double-A rehab start of the year. The 31-year-old right-hander last appeared June 12th against Portland before suffering a setback in his recovery from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery last July. RHP Connor Graham will follow Westbrook.
