New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- Jonathan Diaz lined a two-run home run off the U.S. Cellular Foul Pole in left for his first career Double-A home run, highlighting a three-run fifth inning, but the Bowie Baysox knocked off the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 7-3 before a crowd of 6,219 at Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series.
With New Hampshire (49-60) trailing 5-0 in the home half of the fifth, Adam Calderone (2-for-4, 3B, R) led off by drilling a triple to center off Ryohei Tanaka. Following a one-out walk to Brian Jeroloman (0-for-3, BB, R), Nick Gorneault (1-for-2, SF, RBI) broke up the shutout with a sacrifice fly to center. Diaz (1-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) followed with his first homer as a Fisher Cat, going deep for the first time in 455 at-bats, dating back to April 13, 2008, when he was with the Advanced-A Dunedin Blue Jays. The two-run shot cut the Baysox's lead to 5-3.
Tanaka (2-1) shook off the rough inning to record the victory. The right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings with two strikeouts and a walk.
Randy Boone (8-6) was saddled with the loss after yielding five runs on nine hits, both matching season highs, in four innings. The right-hander fanned two and allowed four walks for the first time all season, suffering his first loss since June 28 and seeing his personal three-game winning streak snapped.
Bowie (59-50) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third on a run-scoring double by Miguel Abreu (3-for-5, 2 2B, 3 RBI, R) and a two-run single by Ambiorix Concepcion (1-for-5, 2 RBI). Abreu's two-run double in the fourth increased the lead to 5-0.
Jonathan Tucker (3-for-5, 3B, 2 R) and Paco Figueroa (1-for-5, 3B, RBI) hit back-to-back triples off reliever Matt Hensley in the top of the sixth inning to stretch the Baysox' lead to 6-3, and Dave Krynzel (1-for-5, HR) put the finishing touches on the series-opening victory by taking Edgar Estanga over the right field wall for a solo homer, his seventh, in the top of the seventh.
Left-hander Bryan Dumesnil, making his Fisher Cats' debut, retired the side in order in the ninth inning, including a strikeout.
The Fisher Cats look to end a five-game skid when they send right-hander Kenny Rodriguez (1-3, 5.22) to the mound on Wednesday night at 7:05pm against Bowie right-hander Pedro Beato (0-0, 0.00), who will be making his Double-A debut. Radio coverage begins at 6:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
