Sea Dogs rally falls short, lose 4-3 in Connecticut

(Norwich, CT) - The Connecticut Defenders (28-20) scored all four runs with two outs to beat the Portland Sea Dogs (23-25) 4-3 on Saturday night in front of 5,035 fans at Dodd Stadium. Portland has dropped the first two games of the series and dip two games under .500 for just the second time this season.

LHP Jesse English (3-3) pitched a season-high 5 innings, scattering two hits and one run to earn the victory for the Defenders. The lefty issued one walk and recorded a personal best 5 strikeouts. LHP Ben Snyder and RHP Geivy Garcia earned holds and LHP Joe Patterson pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his 5th save in as many tries.

RHP Adam Mills (1-3) lasted 5.2 innings allowing nine hits and four runs (three earned) but took the loss for Portland. Mills left the game in the sixth inning after a run-scoring single by C Jackson Williams, giving Connecticut a 4-2 lead and proving to be the game-winning hit.

1B Brett Pill (3-for-4, 2 RBI) knocked in the first 2 runs of the game, nailing a run-scoring single in the first and gap-double to plate DH Eddy Martinez-Esteve in the third. The Defenders increased their lead to 3-0 when LF Bobby Felmy followed Pill's double with one of his own. C Mark Wagner led-off the fourth inning with a solo-homer over the left-field wall.

The Sea Dogs inched closer in the sixth inning off Snyder, who allowed six baserunners and two runs over 2.2 IP. With two outs, 1B Lars Anderson doubled and scored on LF Aaron Bates' single to left field. Bates is hitting .526 (10-for-19), 3 HR and 7 RBI on the trip. For the month, Bates has 26 RBI - 2 shy of tying the franchise record for most RBI's in a month.

In the seventh inning, the 'Dogs had runners at second and third with nobody out but Snyder retired SS Argenis Diaz (strikeout), 2B Zach Borowiak (strikeout) and CF Bubba Bell (pop out) to end the inning. In the eighth inning, 3B Jorge Jimenez drove in Portland's final run with a sacrifice fly to center field.

LHP Dustin Richardson (1.1 IP) and RHP Chad Rhoades (IP) retired all six batters faced over the final two innings in relief of Mills.

The Sea Dogs and Defenders wrap up their 3-game series on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:05 PM from Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT. The Sea Dogs have not named their pitcher for tomorrow's game. RHP Daryl Maday (2-1, 3.38) makes his 10th start of the season for Connecticut.
