Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- For the second straight night a large crowd of 5,035 watched their first place Defenders (28-20)defeat the Portland Sea Dogs 4-3 Saturday night at Dodd Stadium.

An error by Sea Dogs shortstop, Argenis Diaz in the bottom of the sixth proved to be pivotal as C-Jackson Williams drove in 3B-Sharlon Schoop who reached on the miscue with an RBI single as Connecticut held on for a game two victory.

The Defenders hustled their way to an early lead as 2B-Brock Bond turned a leadoff single into a runner in scoring position after LF-Aaron Bates mishandled the ball. Bond later scored on a 1B-Brett Pill RBI single.

Connecticut added to their lead in the third with back to back doubles by Pill and LF-Bobby Felmy to take a comfortable 3-0 lead.

Defender's starter, LHP-Jesse English (3-3) found his comfort zone as well, pitching a season high five innings, allowed one earned run off of two hits, walked one and struck out five in the win. English's only mistake was in the fourth when he left one up for C-Mark Wagner who made him pay with a solo shot over the left field wall.

Portland chipped away at the lead scoring a run in the sixth and in the eighth but Joe Paterson closed the game with a one hit ninth en route to his fifth save of the season.

Sea Dogs starter, RHP-Adam Mills (1-3) continued to struggle as he allowed four runs-three earned off of nine hits, walked two and struck out two in 5.2 innings of work in the loss.

Connecticut and Portland will meet tomorrow in the series finale at 1:05pm at Dodd Stadium and RHP-Daryl Maday (2-1) will take the bump for the Defenders going up against a TBA for the Sea Dogs.
