Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Norwich, CT) - The Portland Sea Dogs (42-32) won their third straight game, defeating the Connecticut Defenders (34-41) 6-5 on Tuesday night at Dodd Stadium. Portland is 3-1 on their roadtrip and has taken 7 of 8 from Connecticut this season.
Mike James battled in the bottom of the ninth inning, surrendering two runs but earned his second save of the season. James yielded consecutive 2-out RBI singles to Adam Witter and Dave Maroul but fanned pinch-hitter Simon Klink to end the game.
Michael Bowden (7-3) worked seven innings on five hits, three runs and fanned six to secure the win for Portland. The righty didn't issue a free-pass but allowed a two-run homer to Ryan Rohlinger, tying the game at three in the fourth inning.
Adam Cowart (5-6) gave up six runs on nine hits in just 4+ innings to take the loss for the Defenders. Portland scored two runs in the first inning on Sandy Madera's 2-out, 2-run homer over the left-field wall. Iggy Suarez added a 2-out, run-scoring single in the third inning.
Bubba Bell snapped a 3-3 tie in the fifth inning with a lead-off home run. Tony Granadillo, Jeff Corsaletti and Madera all singled, ending the night for Cowart. Jason Waddell issued 2 bases-loaded walks to Zach Daeges and Andrew Pinckney, giving Portland a 6-3 lead.
Connecticut's bullpen allowed one baserunner after the fifth inning - a one out single by Tony Granadillo in the sixth. Ronnie Ray hurled three perfect innings for Connecticut.
Carlos Vasquez relieved Bowden in the eighth inning and gave up a lead-off double to Maroul and a bunt-single to Jake Wald. Portland caught a huge break when Wald tried to advance to second base on a curve ball in the dirt but was thrown out at second by Mark Wagner. Vasquez fanned Kyle Haines and retired Antoan Richardson to earn his first hold of the season.
