SCRATCH AND CLAW:Portland lost yesterday but took 2 of 3 from the Binghamton Mets and continues their 7‐game homestand on Friday night against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats (Blue Jays affiliate) at Hadlock Field...This is the final series before the Eastern League breaks for two days due to the All‐Star Game in Trenton, NJ...The Sea Dogs are looking for consecutive series wins for the first time since they won back‐to‐back series against Binghamton and Trenton from June 1‐7.
TIP YOUR CAP: Binghamton's 3B Shawn Bowman snapped a 1‐1 tie with a run‐scoring single in top of the eighth inning and the Mets held on to beat the Sea Dogs 2‐1 on Thursday night at Hadlock Field. RHP Dylan Owen (2‐5) turned in a terrific outing for the Binghamton Mets, hurling 7 strong innings on five hits, one walk and seven strikeouts to pick up the win. LHP Roydrick Merritt pitched a perfect eighth to earn his 3rd hold of the season. RHP Connor Robertson struck out in the side in the ninth inning to notch his second save of the year. 2b Ryan Khoury provided Portland's lone run with a sac‐fly in the fifth inning. ROSTER MOVE: OF Jason Place joins the Sea Dogs from High‐A Salem and OF Matt Sheely was placed on the disabled list...Place was drafted by the Red Sox in the first round (27th overall) of the 2006 June draft...The South Carolina native becomes the 10th first round pick by the Red Sox to play with the Sea Dogs ‐ 1999: Casey Fossum, 2003: David Murphy, 2005: Jacoby Ellsbury, Craig Hansen, Clay Buchholz, Jed Lowrie and Michael Bowden, 2006: Daniel Bard and Kris Johnson...Place was hitting .252 (76‐for‐302) with 4 HR and 48 RBI in 76 games with the Salem Red Sox of the Carolina League. NOT TOO MANY: Portland pitchers had their streak of consecutive innings without a walk snapped at 17 when LHP Felix Doubront issued a free‐pass to 1B Ike Davis in last night's game...The Sea Dogs are ranked 11th in the Eastern League in team ERA at 4.46 but through 10 games in July their ERA is 3.20 (27 ER/76 IP)...RHP Chad Rhoades worked two scoreless frames last night and has not allowed a run in 10 of his last 11 appearances.
AGAINST THE NORTH: Portland is 9‐8 during a 33‐game stretch against the Northern Division...The Sea Dogs start a 26‐game run against the South on July 27 against Reading, Harrisburg, Altoona and Bowie.
