Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- Dodd Stadium hosted 5,318 fans Friday night and saw Connecticut (52-35) come away with 4-2 over their division rival Trenton Thunder in the final homestand before the All Star break.

The Defenders took advantage of a wild pitch in the third inning to take the lead for the first and final time as they claimed game one of the best of four series.

RHP-Daryl Maday was looking to rebound from a rough start a week ago in Reading but quickly had a flashback as he got touched up by the Thunder in the second inning. A leadoff walk to C-Jesus Montero then a double by RF-Edwar Gonzalez put runners in scoring position. DH-Noah Hall then ripped a two RBI single to right field giving Trenton a 2-0 lead.

Connecticut responded in the bottom of the third like a first place team should. After back to back walks to the C-Jackson Williams and 2B-Brock Bond, CF Mike McBryde trimmed the lead in half with an RBI single. 1B- Brett Pill then tied the ball game with an RBI ground out scoring Bond. Heads up base running by McBryde saw him cross on a wild pitch by Bleich and Connecticut captured the lead 3-2.

The Defenders added some insurance in the fifth inning with small ball. Brock Bond led things off with a double and advanced to third on a McBryde sac bunt. Pill took the first pitch he saw and drove in his 63rd run of the season with a sacrifice fly to center.

Daryl Maday (4-3) picked up the win tossing six innings allowing just two runs on seven hits while striking out three and also getting Trenton to ground out into three double plays. Jeremy Bleich (0-3) suffered the loss despite pitching a season high 6.2 innings and striking out six Defenders.

Game two of the series will feature a battle of #4 prospects as RHP-Tim Alderson (5-1) takes the bump for the Defenders up against the Thunder's RHP-Zach McAllister (5-4). First pitch is slated for 6:35pm.
