B-Mets Plate Seven Runs, But Fall Late, 10-7 at New Britain

The seven runs scored by the B-Mets Friday night were the most since they scored nine at Harrisburg June 18. The commonality between both games, unfortunately, is that both games were losses. Despite leading 7-4 after four innings, the Rock Cats reeled off six unanswered to beat Binghamton 10-7 at New Britain Stadium. Caleb Stewart enjoyed his best performance this season going 3-5 with a double and three RBIs.

With the contest tied at seven in the bottom of the seventh inning, New Britain (45-42) plated two runs off Edgar Alfonzo thanks to a two-run single to right from Rene Tosoni that plated Brandon Roberts and Brian Dinkelman making it 9-7. The Rock Cats would add another run in the eighth inning on a solo homer from Erik Lis.

Binghamton (31-55) jumped on the scoreboard first with a two-out rally in the first inning against lefty Ryan Mullins. Ike Davis extended his hitting streak to eight games with a bloop single to right-center to get things started. Then Josh Petersen followed with a blooper of his own to reach and move Davis to third. Stewart then followed with an RBI double down the third base line to make it 1-0.

In the second, Jonathan Malo smashed a double over the head of New Britain leftfielder Juan Portes with two outs to drive home Emmanuel Garcia making it 2-0.

The Rock Cats brought nine men to the plate in the third inning and plated three runs as Eric Niesen struggled with his command on the mound, allowing three singles, two walks and a hit by pitch in the frame giving New Britain a 3-2 lead.

Erik Lis came across in the third on an RBI fielder's choice from Brandon Roberts that put the Rock Cats in front 4-2.

The B-Mets bats came back to life in the fourth inning when they put up five runs. Ruben Tejada started the rally with a one-out double off the leg of the starter Mullins. Garcia followed by walking and then Malo singled to center to score Tejada to get Binghamton within a run. Jose Coronado followed with an RBI single to center scoring Garcia to tie the score at four. Stewart then put the B-Mets in front with a two-run bloop single off reliever Carlos Gutierrez scoring Malo and Coronado. Lucas Duda finished the scoring with a run-scoring single to left plating Petersen to make it 7-4.

Niesen allowed four runs on six hits with three walks in a four-inning start to take a no-decision. Alfonzo was charged with his third loss after giving up two runs in 1.1 innings.

Alex Burnett was the benefactor of the Rock Cats' runs as he picked up his first win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

The B-Mets will play New Britain in game two of the series tomorrow night. RHP Eric Brown (4-9, 5.83) will get the call for Binghamton against RHP Yohan Pino (3-1, 3.53). The game is scheduled for a 7:05 first pitch and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:50 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
