THE HEAT IS ON:TheSea Dogs finished July at .500 (15‐15) and open up August against the Harrisburg Senators (Nationals affiliate) on Saturday night at Metro Bank Park...Portland is 2‐3 on the trip and conclude the 7‐day trip tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 PM...Last night snapped a 2‐game losing streak for the âDogs as they suffered a series loss to Reading in the first leg of the trip (dropped 3 of 4)...Monday is an off‐day for the Sea Dogs and they will begin a 6‐game homestand on Tuesday night against the Altoona Curve (Pirates affiliate).
IN THE RECORD BOOKS: RHP Adam Mills (9‐5) became the first pitcher in franchise history to win six starts in one month as the Sea Dogs cruised by the Harrisburg Senators 8‐3 in the series opener. Mills hurled 7 strong innings, yielding five hits on three runs, no walks and fanned three. Portland's top four hitters (SS Yamaico Navarro, CF Ryan Kalish, 3B Jorge Jimenez and 1B Jon Still) went a combined 9‐for‐19 (.474), HR and 6 RBI. Portland beat LHP Matt Chico (2‐3), who left the game with an undisclosed injury in the third inning. Jimenez capped off the win with a 2‐run homer in the top of the ninth inning and Portland's bullpen (Province and Cox) worked three scoreless innings to seal Portland's 51st win of the year.
IT ALL STARTS HERE: Mills finished July 6‐0, 2.31 ERA (9 ER/35 IP) and became the second pitcher in franchise history to win seven straight starts ‐ LHP Dave Gassner won seven straight starts to finish the 2008 season....Over the last 15 games, the starters have allowed only 18 earned runs in 79 IP (2.05 ERA)...Portland's pitching staff established a new franchise record for ERA in July at 3.06, which led the Eastern League for the month.
WHAT A STRANGE MONTH: Portland lost 11 of 15 games in July by 2 runs or less...Still tied a franchise record with 28 RBI in July but set a new mark for doubles with 13...Kalish established a new record for runs scored in July at 29...RHP Chris Province worked a scoreless inning last night and finished July with 0.70 ERA (1 ER/12 IP)...C Juan Apodaca hit .410 (16‐for‐39), HR, 13 RBI and 7 doubles in July.
FINALLY GOT TO A SOUTHPAW: Jimenez had 11 career homers in 852 at‐bats entering this season but has 11 home runs this year (14 in his Portland career) 365 at‐bats...Last night was his first big‐fly of the season against a lefty this season...Portland is tied for 4th in the Eastern League in homers.
