Davis' Streak Continues, B-Mets Four-Run Eighth Not Enough in 8-4 Loss to Akron
August 1, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
Ike Davis extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a single in the first, but the Binghamton Mets late-inning rally came up short in an 8-4 loss to the Akron Aeros Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium. B-Mets relievers Jim Ed Warden, Edgar Alfonzo and Connor Robertson combined to retire 10 of the last 11 Aeros batters and did not allow a hit over the final three innings.
Akron struck for two runs in the first inning for the second straight night. Jose Constanza led off with a double and after B-Mets starter Dylan Owen retired the next two batters, he issued a walk to Carlos Santana. Beau Mills followed with a two-run double, putting the Aeros ahead 2-0.
Carlos Rivero's grand slam lengthened the lead to six in the third inning. Santana and Mills singled and John Drennen was walked intentionally by Owen before Rivero's blast over the left field wall.
The Aeros added a run in the fifth and sixth innings, extending it to 8-0. Constanza brought in a run with an RBI single off reliever Jose De La Torre in the fifth and in the sixth, Drennen singled in a run against Jim Ed Warden.
Binghamton (40-65) struck for four runs in the eighth off Aeros reliever Zach Putnam. Emmanuel Garcia got the inning started with a one-out walk and Ruben Tejada reached on a fielder's choice and an error by Jesus Merchan. Josh Thole then singled to drive in Garcia for the B-Mets first run. Davis followed with a double, scoring Tejada. Caleb Stewart's two-run double capped the scoring, bringing the score to 8-4. Neil Wagner came on and struck out Mark Kiger and D.J. Wabick to end the rally. Wagner also worked a perfect ninth inning to notch his first save.
Owen went three innings allowing six runs on six hits with four walks to lose his seventh game.
Ryan Edell extended his scoreless streak to 13 innings for Akron (67-41). He went six innings, allowing five hits to pick up his fourth win of the season.
Binghamton takes on Akron in the finale of the three-game set tomorrow night. The B-Mets will send RHP Brad Holt (2-4, 5.49) to the mound and the Aeros will toss RHP Jeanmar Gomez (8-3, 3.47). The first pitch is slated for 6:35 and the radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
