August 1, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release

Norwich, CT- Brad Emaus belted his first home run since May 31st, a two-out, two-run shot in the top of the fifth inning that erased a 1-0 deficit and propelled the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 2-1 lead, but the Connecticut Defenders rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 3-2 walk-off victory and a doubleheader sweep. In the opening game, Connecticut rallied for two sixth-inning runs to post a 3-2 win.

Emaus (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI, IW), who had not homered in 194 at-bats, lined his seventh long ball of the season over the left field wall with Todd Donovan (2-for-4, R, 2 SB), who singled and stole second base, aboard. That spoiled Madison Bumgarner's bid for his eighth win on his 20th birthday and ended his season-long string of 16 scoreless innings against the Fisher Cats (49-58).

In the bottom of the seventh, however, Tyler LaTorre led off with a single off Edgar Estanga. Zach Dials entered the game, allowed a bunt single to Mike McBryde, and following a failed sac bunt, Brett Pill walked to load the bases, and Eddy Martinez-Esteve drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game. The next batter, Brock Bond, ended the game with a single to center, giving the Defenders (62-45) their second come-from-behind win of the day.

Joe Paterson (4-4) threw one pitch to earn the victory, inducing a David Cooper (1-for-4, 2B) fly out in the top of the seventh with two men on base.

Dials (1-2) suffered his first blown save and took the defeat after allowing one run on two hits and two walks in one-third of an inning.

The Defenders scored in the bottom of the first inning when McBryde singled to lead, moved to third on a hit-and-run single by Brad Boyer (1-for-3, HBP, R) and scored on a run-scoring ground out from Pill (0-for-3, RBI, BB), who knocked in his Eastern League-leading 76th RBI of the year.

Facing New Hampshire newcomer Troy Cate in the opening game, Connecticut captured a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Bond (1-for-3, R) doubled, advanced on a sac bunt from McBryde and scored on Pill's RBI grounder. Pill (0-for-3, RBI) reached on a Cooper fielding error and moved to second on Cooper's throwing error on the same play.

The Fisher Cats evened the score, 1-1, in the top of the fourth when Emaus (1-for-3, R) singled, moved to third base on a pair of ground outs and scored from third when Daryl Maday uncorked a wild pitch.

New Hampshire went ahead 2-1 in the top of the fifth when Brian Jeroloman (1-for-3, R) singled, moved to third on a Jonathan Diaz (1-for-2) single and scored when Donovan (1-for-2, SF, RBI) lined a sac fly to deep left.

Connecticut fought back to take the lead for good when Brandon Crawford (1-for-3, 2B, RBI) and Mike Mooney (3-for-3, 2 2B, RBI) hit back-to-back, two-out RBI doubles off Danny Farquhar in the home half of the sixth, putting the Defenders in front, 3-2.

Maday (5-3) retired the side in order in the seventh to notch his first career complete-game victory. The right-hander yielded two runs on six hits with one strikeout.

Farquhar (1-4) allowed a run on two hits in 0.2 innings to absorb the loss.

The Fisher Cats and the Defenders conclude their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm with New Hampshire left-hander Luis Perez (7-8, 3.51) matching up with Connecticut right-hander Garrett Broshuis (2-2, 4.98). Radio coverage gets underway with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy at 12:45pm.

The Fisher Cats open a three-game set against the Bowie Baysox, Double-A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, Tuesday night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium with a 7:05pm game. A pre-game parade and ceremony will honor the participants in the Fidelity Hit the Books Summer Reading Program. For tickets, visit www.nhfishercats.com or call (603) 641-2005.
