Connecticut Defenders News Release

NORWICH, CT- The San Francisco Giants, the parent club of the Connecticut Defenders have promoted relief pitcher Waldis Joaqin to the big league club, the team announced today.

The 22 year old Dominican native came into the '09 season as a member of the Giants 40 man roster and has been a key contributor to a pitching staff that ranks second in the Eastern League. Joaquin posted a 4-5 record and a 2.67 ERA including one save in 36 appearances while also holding opponents to team low .190 BAA while in Connecticut.

The flame throwing righty was most impressive during the stretch of July 2-10 where he collected two wins and his only save in three appearances while rendering just one hit in 5.2 innings of work.

Joaquin was originally signed by the Giants in October of 2003 as a non-drafted free agent out of Villa Tapia, DR. The '09 season marks his sixth with the organization and he has totaled a 15-10 record along with a 3.05 ERA in 254.1 innings of work during this time.

The Giants will make a corresponding move which has yet to be determined to make room for Joaquin.
