Portland Sea Dogs News Release
(Akron, OH) - RHP Junichi Tazawa (7-4) lasted a season-low 4.1 innings, yielding five runs in Portland's (31-30) 5-1 loss to the Akron Aeros (39-21) on Saturday night at Canal Park. The Sea Dogs had their winning streak snapped at two and fall to 2-3 on the trip.
Aeros' starter LHP Ryan Edell (2-0) picked up his first win since May 17 at Altoona. Edell lowered his ERA to 2.45, surrendering just one run on four hits over 5 IP. The lefty's three walks came in the second inning and he finished with six strikeouts.
RHP Vinnie Pestano converted his league-leading 16th save of the season by recording the final four outs. Pestano entered the game in the eighth with the bases loaded and retired LF Ryan Kalish on grounder back to the mound.
Akron scored three times off Tazawa in the second inning. DH Matt McBride (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) led off the inning with a solo-homer to left-center field. RF John Drennan singled and scored on a 2-out triple by CF Jose Constanza (2-for-3, RBI). 2B Jerad Head (2-for-4, RBI) followed Constanza's hit by lacing a run-scoring double to left field.
Tazawa suffered his first loss since May 17 at New Britain and was knocked out of the game in the fifth inning after allowing three consecutive batters to reach base. 1B Beau Mills (3-for-4) RBI single scored LF Nick Weglarz and chased Tazawa out of the game. LHP Dustin Richardson entered the game and yielded a run-scoring double to McBride but finished his outing scoreless over 2.1 IP and fanned five (tied a season-high).
DH Jon Still (1-for-3, RBI) was responsible for Portland's lone run by doubling to the gap in left-center field, scoring 1B Lars Anderson (2-for-3, BB). The Sea Dogs left the bases loaded twice and finished the game 0-for-7 with runners-in-scoring position.
The Sea Dogs can clinch a .500 roadtrip with a win on Sunday afternoon over the Akron Aeros in the rubber matchup of the 3-game series at Canal Park beginning at 1:35 PM. RHP Ryne Lawson (1-4, 6.11) faces off against RHP Hector Rondon (6-4, 3.31). Catch all the action on the U.S. Cellular Sea Dogs Radio Network beginning at 1:05 PM with the CorrectDeck Pre-Game Show.
