June 13, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Erie, PA- Rommie Lewis notched a season-high six strikeouts, including the final five batters he faced, and Brian Dopirak went 2-for-4 with his Eastern League-leading 14th double and an RBI, but the Erie SeaWolves rallied from a 2-0 deficit to post a 5-2 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Saturday night at Jerry Uht Park.
New Hampshire (28-34) went into attack mode in the top of the first inning against winning pitcher Jon Kibler. Todd Donovan (1-for-3, 2B, BB, R) doubled to left, and Brad Emaus (1-for-4, 3B, RBI, R) drove him in with a triple to right. Dopirak (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) added an RBI ground out, staking the Fisher Cats to a 2-0 lead.
Erie (34-27) immediately responded with a pair of runs off losing pitcher Rey Gonzalez in the bottom of the first. Scott Sizemore (1-for-4, 2B, R) stroked a lead-off double to right and scored when Brennan Boesch (1-for-4, 3B, RBI, R) tripled to the right-centerfield gap. Boesch scored the tying run when Gonzalez uncorked his first wild pitch of the season. The two first-inning runs were the first allowed by Gonzalez in an opening stanza since he yielded a lead-off home run to New Britain's Rene Tosoni in his first career Eastern League start on April 9.
Gonzalez (3-4) was removed from the game with a groin pull after surrendering a solo homer to lead-off batter Deik Scram (2-for-3, HR), his seventh, that gave the SeaWolves a 3-2 lead in the second inning. The right-hander surrendered three runs on three hits in one-plus inning, striking out one.
Edgar Estanga, pressed into an emergency relief role, allowed only one hit in three innings, but the one hit was Cale Iorg's sixth homer of the season, a solo blast to left that caromed off the Erie Civic Center for a 4-2 Erie lead.
The SeaWolves added an insurance run in the sixth inning. Ryan Strieby (1-for-4, R) singled off Adrian Martin, advanced to second when Scram hit a bunt single off Lewis and scored when Iorg (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) singled to center, making it 5-2.
Lewis recovered to strike out six of the final seven batters he faced.
Kibler (3-4) allowed two runs on seven hits in six innings to record the win. The lefty struck out two and walked one.
Zach Simons fanned five over three one-hit innings to notch his first save.
The Fisher Cats conclude their road trip with a Sunday afternoon 1:05pm game against the SeaWolves. Right-hander Brandon Magee (3-3, 4.78) takes the mound for New Hampshire against Erie right-hander Alfredo Figaro (4-2, 4.30). Radio coverage begins at 12:45pm with the BayRing Pre-Game Show on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy.
The Fisher Cats return to Merchantsauto.com Stadium on Tuesday, June 16, to open a four-game series against the Akron Aeros, Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, at 7:05pm. There will be a pre-game parade to honor students who participated in the CCSNH Fisher Cats Reading Challenge, and it's Fungo's Birthday.
