June 13, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release

NORWICH, CT - The Altoona Curve were able to snap a five-game skid and did so by defeating one of the most prized prospects in Minor League Baseball. Altoona hung southpaw Madison Bumgarner with his first Double-A loss sneaking by the Connecticut Defenders (AA - San Francisco) 4-3 on Saturday night at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, Connecticut.

The 19-year old Bumgarner (4-1) allowed three runs to the Curve offense. Altoona jumped out to a 1-0 edge over Bumgarner when Hector Gimenez doubled home Jason Delaney to give the edge.

The Curve would tack on three runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Two of the runs were charged to Bumgarner after Gimenez singled home a run in and pinch-hitter Jeff Corsaletti walked with the bases loaded. Altoona would tally their final run when Jamie Romak crossed the plate on a wild pitch from reliever Geivy Garcia.

Connecticut would chip away at the Curve lead scoring single runs in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, but closer Scott Nestor was able to retire the side in the ninth to notch his third save of the year.

The Curve (20-42) will take on the Defenders (35-26) in the final game of the three-game series which is the final game of their six-game road trip on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. RHP Mike Crotta (3-3, 5.90) will take the hill for Altoona while Connecticut right-hander Daryl Maday (2-2, 3.62) will oppose. Radio coverage of Sunday's contest will begin at 12:50 p.m. on flagship station ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and on Altoona Curve Radio Network affiliate stations.
