New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Matt Moses delivered a walk-off two-run single to give the Rock Cats a 6-5 win over Bowie on Saturday night. The hit saved both teams from having to further reach into their bullpens, as each team sent five pitchers to the mound throughout the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, Erik Lis sliced a single to center field with one out against reliever Josh Perrault (0-1). Toby Gardenhire followed with a single to left field before a throwing error by first baseman Brandon Snyder, who attempted to throw out Gardenhire at second, allowed Rene Tosoni to reach base safely and load them up for the ‘Cats. The Rock Cats sent Brian Dinkelman to the plate to pinch-hit for Jeff Christy, but the hot-hitting second baseman popped out to deep short. That set the stage for Moses, who blooped a base hit into center field for the tying and winning runs to cap off a comeback for the Rock Cats.

Bowie jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when Jonathan Tucker led off the inning with a triple off Rock Cats starter Carlos Gutierrez in his New Britain Stadium debut. Robert Valido delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Baysox on top, 1-0. Gutierrez issued a walk before forcing a ground force out and fly out to end the inning.

The Rock Cats answered the bell in the fifth with three runs that started off with a leadoff single by Yancarlos Ortiz. With one out, Whit Robbins and Danny Valencia followed with consecutive singles. Erik Lis continued the singles parade with a base hit to center field that plated two runs to give the Rock Cats ahead, 2-1. Valencia later scored on a ground out by Toby Gardenhire.

Gutierrez gave way to Frank Mata in the top of the sixth. Mata immediately allowed a ground-rule double to right field and a single by Miguel Abreu that Mata deflected off his glove. Costanzo scored on a ground force out by Ambiorix Concepcion that retired Abreu at second. Mata walked Joseph Nowicki before being lifted for Jose Lugo, who allowed an RBI single by Daniel Figueroa that tied the game. An error by Ortiz at shortstop off the bat of Guillermo Rodriguez allowed another run to score to give the Baysox the lead. Bowie tacked on one more run when Tucker reached on a fielder's choice that scored Concepcion, who had stolen second base to put himself in scoring position.

Anthony Slama (4-1) retired three straight batters in the ninth to keep the Rock Cats within striking distance and pick up the win.

Gutierrez, who was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the first round of the 2008 draft, allowed one run on five hits in his second game in Double-A.
