Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release

Tobi Stoner allowed just three hits in seven-shutout innings Saturday afternoon at Waterfront Park to lead Binghamton over Trenton 4-0 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. Salvador Paniagua, a late insert to the lineup, drove in all four of the B-Mets' runs with a solo homer and a three-run double in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively.

The game was scoreless in the fifth inning and reliever Ryan Pope, who was slated to start the game, was in cruise control having retired 10 in a row. However, Paniagua broke that streak as he launched a Pope changeup over the wall in right to break the scoreless tie and put the B-Mets out in front for good.

Binghamton (25-35) added three more runs in the sixth inning as Josh Thole, Shawn Bowman and D.J. Wabick came up with singles off Pope to load the bases with one out. After Josh Petersen struck out looking, Paniagua smacked a double over rightfielder Richie Robnett's head to clear the bases on a 3-2 pitch and provide the B-Mets a 4-0 margin.

Trenton (31-29) used Major League rehabber Brian Bruney for the first inning and got a scoreless frame from the right-handed relief specialist, who retired all three he faced.

Pope, who followed, took his fifth loss of the season by surrendering four runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings. It was his first relief appearance of the season. J.B. Cox, fresh down from Scranton/Wilkes Barre threw the final 1.1 innings scoreless for the Thunder.

The complete-game shutout was the first of Stoner's four-year minor-league career. He had just one previous complete game, which came in his rookie season with Brooklyn (September 4, 2006 against Lowell).

Three of the B-Mets last five wins have come in shutout-fashion, dating back to the May 29 game at New Britain.
