Déjà vu All Over Again...Portland defeated the Aeros last night by the final score of 1-0 in front of 6,612 fans on Fireworks Night at Canal Park. It was the second time this season that the Aeros lost 1-0 at home, as four Sea Dogs pitchers combined to allow only five hits and three walks to the Akron hitters. The lone run of the evening came through in the top of the sixth inning against Aeros reliever Zach Putnam, as a one-out walk to Reid Engel and a two-out double from Mark Wagner provided all the offense Portland would need. Akron rallied in the eighth when a two-out single by Carlos Santana with men on first and second seemed to tie the game, but a perfect throw from Portland left fielder Iggy Suarez nailed Cristo Arnal at the plate.
Jake the Snake...RHP Jake Westbrook delivered four scoreless innings while allowing three hits and striking out three in his second rehab assignment for Cleveland. It was the 31-year-old's second straight scoreless appearance for Akron, and yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of his Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. Westbrook needed only 45 of his allotted 60 pitches to get through four frames, and was helped by a stellar defensive play in the top of the fourth. Argenis Diaz was at second with two outs when Jon Still knocked a single back through the box. CF Jose Constanza delivered a one-hop dart home however, and C Carlos Santana blocked the plate perfectly and then calmly tagged out Diaz after he had gone sprawling past to record the final out of the inning and preserve the scoreless tie.
Drennen Digs Doubles...RF John Drennen delivered one of the five hits of the evening for the Aeros yesterday, as he smacked his 12th double of the season to right field in the third inning. Incredibly, it was his seventh double in 11 games played during the month of June after coming back up from Class A Kinston on June 1st. For the month, Drennen now has a very impressive .732 slugging percentage thanks to two home runs, while also leading the team with 16 RBI and a .366 batting average (15-41).
Back to Basics...Over the last seven games the Aeros are outscoring their opponents by a total of 36-15 en route to winning five out of seven and maintaining a 3.0-game lead in the division. In these seven contests, Akron is hitting .231 (51-221) and are holding opponents to a measly .178 (37-208) batting average against. The offense has also drawn 28 walks and struck out only 32 times, while the pitching staff has allowed only 12 earned runs in 60.0 innings pitched for a sparkling 1.80 team ERA.
Roster Moves...The Aeros made two roster moves today, transferring RHP Brian Grening to Class A Mahoning Valley and getting OF Matt McBride back from the Scrappers roster. McBride is hitting .216 with no homers and 10 RBI in 21 games.
Saturday Spectacular...Tonight's game features the Busson Digital Printing Team Poster Giveaway and will also be the second U.S. Army night of the season, with the Aeros sporting their new alternate camouflage uniforms for the second time this season.
