Scrappers lose 2-1
July 25, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
The Scrappers (14-20) had won four of their last five heading into Saturday night's matchup with the Brooklyn Cyclones (19-15), but came up short by a final of 2-1.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Scrappers had the tying run at third base in Jodd Carter, but Silento Sayles struck out swinging to end it.
Brooklyn scored both of its runs in the top of the fourth. Will Fulmer was hit by a Shao-Ching Chiang pitch, and Vinny Siena reached on an error by Mark Mathias. A sacrifice fly for Brandon Brosher and Hengelbert Rojas to score both Fulmer and Siena was all the scoring the Cyclones needed.
In the bottom of the eighth, Nate Winfrey hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Ka'ai Tom, who reached earlier in the inning on an error by Oswald Caraballo. All of the runs scored were from runners who reached in a way other than a hit. Fulmer was hit by a pitch, Siena reached on an error, and Tom reached on an error.
Brooklyn only needed two hits, but got help from the three Mahoning Valley errors.
Chiang (2-1) takes the loss, while Gaby Almonte (4-2) earned the win. Neither pitcher allowed an earned run. The rubber game is Sunday afternoon at 4:05. Casey Shane takes the hill for Mahoning Valley against Andrew Church.
