Lowell Spinners News Release

LOWELL, MASS. - It was Pirates Night at LeLacheur Park with Captain Jack Sparrow and his band of Pirates in the house, but the Lowell Spinners walked the plank with their fourth straight loss, falling to the Auburn Doubledays, 5-2, Saturday evening at LeLacheur Park.

Auburn (16-18) took advantage of Jose Almonte's lack of control in the second inning. After a leadoff walk, Almonte hit Jackson Reetz. With one out, a double steal put both runners into scoring position and an RBI single by Luis Guzman and sacrifice fly from Max Schrock, both last minute line-up additions, gave the Doubledays a 2-0 lead.

Lowell (17-18) got a run back in the bottom of the second after a two-out walk by Josh Ockimey, Isaias Lucena doubled to the left-centerfield gap to cut the deficit to one.

The Doubledays would get that run back in the third inning when Almonte issued back-to-back walks to lead off the inning before giving way to Matt Kent. A wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position and a sacrifice fly gave Auburn a 3-1 lead.

The Spinners got that run back in the third inning on a double by Luis Alexander Basabe and Jeremy Rivera triple brought the Spinners back within a run.

Auburn rallied for a pair of runs in the fifth inning when a pair of Spinners errors led directly to a pair of Doubleday runs.

Lucena and Rivera each had two-hit nights, each driving in a run. Almonte (2-2, 4.50) went just two plus innings, allowing three runs on four walks and a base hit, throwing just 32 of his 67 pitches for strikes. Kent allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits over four innings of long relief. Edwar Garcia followed with a scoreless inning while Bobby Poyner pitched two scoreless to give the Spinners a chance a comeback.

The Spinners look to avoid the sweep Sunday afternoon on a special night at LeLacheur Park. It is "Inspiration Night" at LeLacheur Park and the first 1,000 fans will receive a Peter Frates Ice Bucket Bobble as we raise funds and awareness for ALS and the Frates #3 Fund. Dioscar Romero will get the ball for a 3:05 first pitch.
